This introductory course is parallel to SPAN 1, but is designed for Spanish heritage speakers, or other linguistically qualified students, with limited to no formal study of the language. It is conducted totally in Spanish, with emphases on grammar and writing. Through the study of selected readings, students will expand on their own experiences and explore other Spanish- speaking cultures. Readings are pertinent to the culture, history, and literature of Hispanics in the United States, Latin America and Spain. Compositions will explore personal, political, and cultural issues, as well as analyses of Spanish and Latin American literary pieces. This includes the study of culture through contemporary Hispanic readings. The course increases awareness of linguistic registers, discusses items beyond the familiar routine, and instills an appreciation of Hispanic cultures manifested in Spanish-speaking countries including the United States. The course is equivalent to the satisfactory completion of two years of high school instruction in Spanish. Portions of instruction may be offered online; may also be offered fully online. This course will cover an increased awareness of cultural norms, values, and culturally relevant appropriate customs and events. Accuracy becomes quite high for high-frequency structures and vocabulary but more complex discourse is still developing and requires a somewhat sympathetic listener or reader. Students think critically by analyzing linguistic structures and reflecting on and making cross-cultural comparisons. This course is taught in Spanish. This course emphasizes the practice of reading a text in English and then effectively and efficiently translating it orally into Spanish, and vice versa. Students learn different techniques to be able to express complex ideas in English and Spanish. Students receive a series of Sight Translation assessments. Each week, students learn useful Sight Translation techniques, acquire vocabulary in English and Spanish, and solve problems of contrastive syntax. Specific topics include principles of localization, equivalent structures, re-structuring techniques, and language interference. Students also learn about speed-reading and delivery style. The localization process is related to the cultural adaptation and translation of video games, websites, iPhone applications, technical communication, voiceover, video, or other multimedia content. This course combines career orientation and connection of your bilingual abilities with jobs while it emphasizes and affirms the important value of U.S. Spanish and the language that is used in U.S. Latino barrios.
