ETNC 6 -  Ethnic Images in Film  (3 units)

This Ethnic Studies course introduces students to intersections of identity, ethnic culture, race, socio-economic class and gender in the United States through the medium of film. It examines film content and construction for representation and presentation of ethnic images, the multiple dimensions of media stereotypes, and the authenticity of diverse ethnic experiences with particular emphasis on Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latina and Latino Americans. Using film as the primary lens, it also analyzes ways in which ideologies are conveyed, how cultural values have formulated, and how technological, industrial, and aesthetic factors affect screen content. Students analyze films, figures, character types and narrative strategies to evaluate the relationship between film and identity within American society. It explains significant theories, philosophies, concepts, issues, and social movements related to racial and social justice and liberation in the discipline of Ethnic Studies. It examines and compares diverse perspectives and experiences related to empowerment, identity, equity, self-determination, agency, and anti-racism within American society, as well as the effects of institutional racism and marginalization on African American, Native American, Asian American, and Chicano/Latino racial and ethnic groups. The course also emphasizes the interconnections among social processes, group interaction, and individual identity formation. This course will focus on Chicanos and the U.S. Constitution, political process of decision making by the Presidency, Congress, and the Supreme Court, and the California Constitution, laws and initiatives, and governors, and explore the impact of eurocentrism, ethnocentrism, racism, white supremacist, racial discrimination, class, gender, age, religion, institutional racism, language discrimination, colonization, and immigration in the Chicana/o community. Students will review how the Chicana/o community has applied theory and knowledge gained through solidarity, racial struggle, racial resistance, and agency formation, and how this organizing has positively impacted Chicano communities. It examines Native American and Indigenous societies, with attention to the impact of contact upon indigenous cultures and societies in the United States, analyzing settler colonialism and structural discrimination, including an examination of Native responses to contact and colonization. It analyzes the evolution and self-determination within Native American and Indigenous culture in the context of past and present societal circumstances.
