This course surveys various psychological research methods with an emphasis on research design, experimental procedures, descriptive methods, instrumentation, and the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of research data. Research design and methodology are examined through a review of research in a variety of the subdisciplines of psychology. In laboratory sessions students conduct experimental and non-experimental research in a variety of areas of psychology. This course introduces statistical methods for collecting and analyzing data in the social sciences. Topics include basic research design, descriptive statistics, probability and sampling distributions, statistical inference and power, linear correlation and regression, t-test and one-way analysis of variance, and chi-square. Students use appropriate technology (e.g., calculators and SPSS) to analyze real-world data and report results using American Psychological Association and American Sociological Association styles.
