Graduation Competency Requirements
Competency Requirements
- Each graduation competency requirement may be satisfied in various ways as described below.
- An official college or high school transcript must verify course and grade.
- An official score report must be presented to verify AP, CLEP, or IB scores.
- Reading and Writing Competency
- Completion of ENGL 1A - College Composition (3 units) or ENGL 1AE - College Composition: Enhanced (5 units) with a grade of “C” or better or a verified equivalent course successfully completed at another college.
- Achievement of any of the following minimum test scores:

- Mathematics Competency
- A grade of “C” or better for one year in Algebra II, Common Core Integrated Math 3, or equivalent math course, or higher math course from a high school or another secondary institution.
- A grade of “C” or better in intermediate algebra or in a higher MPC math course.
- A grade of “C-” or better in an equivalent intermediate algebra course or in a higher math course from another university or college.
- Achievement of any of the following minimum test scores:

- Information Competency
(Not required for Associate in Art for Transfer (AA-T) or Associate in Science for Transfer (AS-T) degree)
- Completion of LIBR 50 - Introduction to Library and Research Skills (1 units).
- Completion of an equivalent course at another college or university.
- Completion of the Information Competency Requirement at another college or university.
- A satisfactory score on the Information Competency proficiency exam (0 units).
- Credit by examination with a passing grade “C” or better will be accepted for LIBR 50 - Introduction to Library and Research Skills (1 units).
4. Ethnic Studies
A grade of “C” or better in one of the MPC Ethnic Studies (ETNC) courses listed below or completion of an equivalent course at another college or university. Courses fulfilling this requirement from other colleges or universities may include baccalaureate-level courses in the four autonomous disciplines within Ethnic Studies: Black Studies; African American Studies; Africana Studies; Native American Studies; Chicano/a/x; Latino/a/x Studies/La Raza Studies; and Asian American Studies.
- ETNC 4 - Mexican-American and Chicano Art (3 units)
- ETNC 6 - Ethnic Images in Film (3 units)
- ETNC 10 - Introduction to Ethnic Studies (3 units)
- ETNC 13/SOCI 13 - Introduction to Race and Ethnicity (3 units)
- ETNC 14/SOCI 14 - Sociology of Latinos and Latinas (3 units)
- ETNC 18 - Chicanos in American Politics (3 units)
- ETNC 20/ANTH 20 - Native American and Indigenous Peoples of the United States (3 units)
- ETNC 22/SOCI 22 - Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in American Society (3 units) (also approved for CSU GE/IGETC)
- ETNC 23/HIST 23 - Chicano History 1848 to Present (3 units)
